Tattoo Pre-Care & Aftercare Guide
Fine Line Tattoo Pre Care
To ensure the best possible result for your fine line tattoo, we recommend the following:
Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment.
Eat a balanced meal beforehand to help you stay relaxed and feeling your best during your appointment.
Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning substances (such as aspirin) for at least 24 hours prior.
Minimise sun exposure and avoid sunburn on the area being tattooed.
Keep the skin clean and well-moisturised in the lead-up, but avoid applying lotions on the day of your appointment.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the tattoo area.
Fine Line Tattoos Aftercare
Fine line tattoos require gentle care to preserve their delicate detail:
Leave the initial bandage on for the time advised by your artist (usually a few hours).
Once removed, gently cleanse the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
Pat dry with a clean towel - do not rub.
Apply a very thin layer of recommended aftercare ointment.
Repeat cleansing and light moisturising 2–3 times daily.
During healing:
Avoid touching the tattoo unnecessarily.
Do not pick, scratch, or peel any flaking skin.
Avoid submerging the tattoo in water (no baths, pools, or ocean) for at least 2 weeks.
Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning.
Wear loose clothing to prevent irritation.
Fine Line Tattoo Healing Expectations
Fine line tattoos typically heal quite softly and subtly. In the first few days, the tattoo may appear slightly darker or more defined. As healing progresses, you may notice light flaking and a temporary fading or “softening” of the lines. Once fully healed over a few weeks, the tattoo will settle into a more delicate, refined appearance. Minor touch-ups can sometimes be needed to maintain crispness.
Cosmetic Tattoo Pre Care
For optimal healing and pigment retention:
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and blood-thinning medications 24–48 hours prior to your appointment.
Refrain from tanning or prolonged sun exposure in the treatment area.
Do not use active skincare (such as retinol or exfoliants) on the area for at least 5–7 days prior.
Ensure the skin is healthy, with no irritation, cuts, or infections.
If prone to cold sores (for lip tattooing), consult your healthcare provider regarding preventative treatment.
Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup or skincare products.
Cosmetic Tattoo Aftercare (10-Day Dry Healing Method)
Banksia and Blade follows a gentle dry healing approach for cosmetic tattoo procedures to support optimal pigment retention and skin recovery.
First 48 Hours:
Keep the area completely dry.
Gently blot with a clean tissue if necessary to absorb any lymph fluid.
Do not apply any creams or products during this initial period.
From 48 Hours to Day 10:
Continue to keep the area dry - avoid water, steam, sweat, and humidity where possible.
Begin applying a small amount of the recommended aftercare cream 2–3 times daily using clean hands or a cotton tip.
Apply sparingly; the skin should not feel overly saturated.
Important Guidelines:
Do not pick, scratch, or peel the area.
Avoid makeup on the treated area for the full 10 days.
Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning.
Avoid exercise that causes excessive sweating.
No swimming, saunas, or long showers exposing the area to moisture.
Cosmetic Tattooing Healing Expectations
Healing is a natural and important part of the tattoo process. While each individual may vary slightly, most clients will experience the following stages:
Days 1 - 3:
The area may appear bold, slightly swollen, and tender. Some redness and light fluid release is normal.
Days 4 - 7:
The skin may begin to dry, tighten, and lightly flake or scab. The tattoo may appear dull or slightly uneven during this phase.
Days 7 - 10:
Flaking subsides and the skin begins to settle. The tattoo may appear lighter or “softened” as the top layer heals.
Weeks 3 - 4:
The tattoo continues to refine as the skin fully regenerates. Pigment and detail become more visible and balanced.
For cosmetic tattooing, a 4-6 week touch-up appointment is often recommended once healing is complete to perfect the result.
